To be blunt there is usually, though not always, a surplus of women in open classes: here's a hint you have a better chance of getting a partner if you don't bring a girl friend with you to ballroom dance class!
In Perth classes ballroom dance classes do not normally include New Vogue but will often include some Latin American classes: confusing! The most often taught dances in beginners ballroom dancing class are; waltz, rhythm foxtrot, quickstep, cha cha, rhumba, rock and roll or jive. Sometimes a little salsa or merengue are included as well though these two dances are not really part of the formal Latin American syllabus but belong is the Street Latin syllabus.

The need or desire to learn to dance happens at certain well-defined times in peoples lives. Weddings are of course the #1 reason for many people to want to learn to dance: and a few months before the spring wedding season often sees an up swing in inquiries for dance lessons for not just the bridal party but also key invited guests. Other times such as the school or university leaving ball will also see people learning to dance. My first dance class was as a result of an invite to a large formal wedding from a partner who was also the best man. I never got to the wedding, and the relationship never worked out but my love affair with learning to dance has gone from strength to strength!
If you want to learn to dance for a specific event such as a wedding or a ball then its worth finding out what style of music is being played: although it is possible to rock and roll to a waltz its not always the most acceptable thing to do! Look for a class which allows you to have a free first dance class: to try before you buy. Check out if the studio has social nights or practice nights: go along to one of those to see if feel comfortable and at ease. A word of warning though: at the more "serious" studios you will often find people more focussed on their dancing than being sociable - its nothing personal its just that dancing can become a very big time and money consuming passion - you have been warned
Also another trick is to remember that a lot of dance classes are based on school terms: so find a calendar and find out when the next school term starts: keep an eye out a week or 2 before and you will see dance classes advertised in your local Community Newspaper or even the notice board at the local pub or library.
